Doctrine and Covenants is a compilation of the open canon of scripture received or submitted by prophet-presidents and other leaders throughout the history of the restoration movement and during the establishment and growth of  The Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints From 1820 through 1978. Its primary purpose is to help members live their lives more productively and in close harmony with God’s will. Because this is a living document that upholds the church’s Enduring Principle of Continuing Revelation, portions may be added  from sections as they reflect the mind and will of God and are approved by the common consent of the people through their elected representatives in world conference assemblies. Church policies and procedures then implement what this document empowers. This book is divided into sections (up to section 159) and has a  topical index.
