Answering the progressive interpretation
Progressive dispensationalists argues that Christ is now on the Davidic throne in heaven because he is seated at the right hand of God in glory ( Psalm 110: 1-2 ). They argue this from several’s quotes in the Epistle of Paul . The description of Christ as seated at the right hand of God in collossians 3:1 Appear in context with the phase Kingdom of his { God } beloved son ( 1:13 ) a phase that combine three features of David promise —- Kingdom; Abiding loving Kindness, and sonship —- and applies them all to Jesus present position and activity in heaven ( Blaising and Bock P.179 ) But Psalm 110 say Christ is seated not on his Messianic throne but at the right hand of God (110:1 ). The verses in this Psalm refer to his earthly rule and not his headship over the church.
Progressive emphasis Psalm 110:4; The Lord have sworn and will not change his mind you are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” Is his Mechizedekian priesthood related to the Davidic Covenant or to the New Covenant, Which have to do with his sacrifice for sin and redemption? This verse is sandwich between verses about Christ Future Davidic reign on earth, but the writer of Hebrews ties the Melchizedek relationship to the New Covenant and not to the Davidic.
The writer say that Christ “remain a Priest perpetually” (Hebrew 7:3 ) — as a priest like Melchizedek with no priestly tribal connections or priestly lineage. In this position He has become the guarantee of a better Covenant” (7:22 ) and He did this by offering Himself as a sacrifice ( 7:27). As a priest like Melchizedek and one not after the Levitical priestly line. Christ brought about the initiation of the new Covenant as the writer of Hebrews point out (8:8-13;Jeremiah 31:31-34 ) The author of Hebrews never indicate that Christ is now reigning on the throne of David in heaven!
Pentecost ( P.104 ) makes this conclusion: It can be shown that in all the preaching concerning the kingdom by John ( Matthew 3:2 ), by Christ (Matthew 10:5-7 ), by the Seventy ( Luke 10:1-12 ) Not once is the Kingdom offer to Israel anything but an earthly literal kingdom….. Christ anticipate such a literal earthly kingdom ( Matthew 25:1-13, 31-46 ). The new Testament never relates the kingdom promised to David to Christ present session.
The Davidic Covenant will be fulfilled in the future when the Lord come to earth and sits “On his glorious throne ( Matthew 25:31 ) As king. He will call all who are blessed of his father and say”Inherit the kingdom prepare for you from the foundation of the world” ( Matthew 25:34 ).Thought this kingdom will last 1000 years. It is an internal kingdom that will go on into eternal kingdom that will go on into eternity. Since the “throne” House” and “Kingdom” were all promised to David in perpetuity, Messiah reign over David Kingdom from David throne must never end. The Davidic Covenant is therefore of vital importance to the understanding of future events. ———— MAL COUCH
